What is trauma therapy?
Trauma therapy is a specialised form of counselling that helps people understand and work through the impact of traumatic experiences.
Trauma is not only about what happened- it is also about how your brain, body, emotions, and relationships have been affected by those experiences.
Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore what you have been through, understand your responses, and develop ways to cope with the challenges that trauma can leave behind.
Importantly, trauma therapy is not about forcing you to revisit painful memories before you are ready. A trauma-informed approach recognises that safety, trust, choice, and feeling in control are essential parts of healing.
How trauma therapy can help
Trauma therapy may support you to:
-
Understand why you respond the way you do
-
Recognise and manage triggers and strong emotions
-
Develop strategies to feel more grounded and safe
-
Process difficult experiences when you feel ready
-
Rebuild confidence, trust, and connection
-
Develop a kinder understanding of yourself and your responses
A compassionate and collaborative approach
Everyone’s experience of trauma is different. There is no single timeline for healing, and therapy should always be guided by your individual experiences, needs, goals, and readiness.
At Jude McGill Therapy, I offer a safe and supportive space where you can explore your experiences with care and without judgement. Together, we can work towards understanding the impact of trauma, developing strategies to support your wellbeing, and finding ways to help you reconnect with yourself and your life.
Trauma therapy often follows a three-phased approach. This involves building safety and stability, gently processing traumatic experiences when you are ready, and integrating these experiences in a way that supports healing and growth. The pace of therapy is guided by you and what feels manageable at each stage.
Trauma therapy can support people who have experienced:
-
Violence or crime
-
Family and domestic violence
-
Childhood trauma
-
Relationship trauma
-
Accidents or unexpected events
-
Medical trauma
-
Grief, loss, or other overwhelming experiences
If you have experienced something traumatic, reaching out for support can be an important step. Healing does not mean forgetting what happened , it means developing greater understanding, safety, and choice in your life moving forward.
